If you’ve never visited Bravo Bride, you’re missing out. What is it, you ask? BravoBride.com is an online marketplace where brides, newlyweds and wedding vendors can buy and sell new or pre-owned wedding items. When I first discovered this site, I immediately bought a never worn hair ornament by Twigs & Honey at a major discount and I literally wear it all the time. You can literally find just about anything on the site though; wedding dresses, jewelry, shoes, favors, reception items etc. etc., you get the idea.

Some current offerings include a Vera Wang gown listed for about 1/3 the original price and a Tiffany & Co. wedding band (usually $1200) listed for $650.  They also just launched a new Bravo Bride boutique section for wedding vendors to sell their own discounted items.

So head on over and have a look…you never know what kind of amazing deal you might find. And if you ever need a good laugh, be sure to check out their blog, which features daily funny and awkward wedding photos!

Here’s a cute picture of Susan & Mark, the faces behind Bravo Bride…how adorable are they!!!

I just love love love this adorable Alice in Wonderland-inspired bridal shower that Unbride Leslie sent us. Her lovely bridesmaids planned an intimate Mad Hatter tea party at Comme Ca in West Hollywood complete with Croque Monsieurs, Photo Albums, Chai Teas, Red Velvet Cupcakes, Flower-filled Tea Pots, and Champagne.

It’s amazing how the wonderful world of weddings can connect you with long lost friends. A few weeks ago I got an email from Maggie Wickes, one of my Alpha Phi sisters from college whom I don’t think I’ve seen since graduation which is what, like almost 10 years ago now. Wow, time really flies on by. Anyway, I was just tickled to see that besides being a Harvard-educated attorney now living in Denver, Maggie is also now the owner and founder of a The Blue Bird Candy Dish Co. Maggie tells me that she plans to use candy dishes as centrepieces at her wedding next year and I just love the idea. Perfect for the candy-lovers out there or those who want something more long-lasting and/ or less expensive than elaborate floral designs.

Check out all of these delectable candies you could fill your dishes with…yum yum!!!

Now I know as well as anyone how easy it is to get caught up on all of the details of your wedding day and let your budget get a little bit out of control. But even if you’ve splurged on that dream gown that was twice the price you had planned for, at least now you can be financially responsible with your registry. Personally I didn’t want 12 sets of china that I would never use or a bunch of crystal glassware. But if I had known about Wedding Futures at the time, I totally would have registered here.
wf_logo_80
It’s a place where friends and family can invest in your financial future rather than buying you a bunch of stuff that you may or may not need. I think it’s a fabulous idea and here’s how it works:

So who else out there would rather have a solid financial future than a new teapot or a gravy bowl?

I’ve shot a couple of weddings recently where my adorable brides had adorable ideas for their escort card tables so I figured why not share them here? This one is from a wedding that was just yesterday at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC. It was a pretty traditional and formal wedding so I loved the fact that they wanted to incorporate some fun, cutesy elements to spice things up a bit. The escort card table was simple and fun with white pintuck linens, gerbera daisies and pink lollipops wrapped in plastic.
lollipopplacecards001
Each lollipop had a guest escort card tied to it with a little white ribbon. Subtle, elegant and playful.
lollipopplacecards002
They were a big hit with the guests too and doubled as favors. In my opinion the best favors are almost always edible.

With all the planning, and budget balancing, and negotiating, and in-law-to-be accommodating, it seems like there is not enough time for the love and laughter of happily-ever-after. Well, you take care of the love and the happily-ever-after and we’ll give two spots to check out for a laugh. The first is a book of faux wedding announcements, called “Weddings of the Times”. You can listen to an interview of the author on NPR here. The following is an excerpt.

Caroline Hanson, Dean Van Wyck
“Caroline Hanson was married to Dean Van Wyck on Saturday at the Peach Tree farm in Scarsdale, NY.
The bride, 33, wore a strapless white Vera Wang wedding gown.
The bridegroom, 38, wore tight-fitting purple breeches, a white silk shirt, a fox-fur mantle, and a livery collar from which was suspended a diamond the size of a walnut.”

The second, I happily stumbled upon while helping Justine research her wedding cake. It’s called Cake Wrecks, and they feature cakes for all occasions that have gone “horribly, hilariously wrong.” Below is an example of a couple of peeps getting married…literally. Enjoy!

I have been meaning to write a post about this for absolutely ages so here goes. Since I’m a photographer myself, I knew that that one of my top priorities for my wedding was going to be having a vintage photo booth. I have some great memories of going into those things as a kid and making funny faces. It was always a great keepsake from what I remembered as fun times…so why not have one at my wedding, right?

I was very happy to find Photobooth Scrapbooks after a google search who not only provided the booth but even had an attendant there who was responsible for instructing guests on what to do and even put together a fantastic guest book for us which is now one of my most prized possessions.

Photobooth Scrapbooks is a national company so you can get them in just about any city. Tell them that you heard about them on The Unbride. :)

I was just going through some of our wedding pictures to make sure that everyone who needs pictures has them. And one of those people is Bill Di Loreta, who was kind enough to drive us around on our wedding day in his fabulous 1957 Pink Cadillac. This car was SO gorgeous I just had to share some pictures here.

Hey everyone, I’m excited to bring you today’s post which is a spotlight on Elle F Designs, a totally adorable Etsy Shop specializing in quirky and whimsical custom cake toppers. Leslie is the master mind behind these fabulous creations and I’ve asked her to share a little bit about how she got into this art form.

“Art Director by day…crafter by night!

From the earliest days I can remember, I have had a love for crafts! Even as a child, I was drawn to creating and decorating items created from things found in everyday life — scraps of fabric, interesting paper, string, buttons, trim, containers of various sort and such. This love for creating things transformed itself in an art school education and later employment as a textile designer for kidswear.

My work, even in school, has always had a whimsical quality —- more fun and carefree. I have found I enjoy creating things that are fanciful and warm from a variety of items that are cleverly composed to interest the eye.

Over the years, I continued to work as a commercial artist by day. In my spare time, I created prints, collages and decoupaged items. I gave away many of these items as gifts for family and friends. Over time, I was approached to create handmade items for the life events of those around me — baby gifts, wedding presents and items for special birthdays and anniversaries. To provide the supplies I needed for these projects, I scoured antique sales, flea markets and online shopping to find interesting textiles, trim and ephemera I could use for my various projects and to display around my home.

I first created a cake topper as a birthday gift for a friend. Later, I made one as a wedding present. The gifts were so well-received that it inspired me to consider making toppers for sale and on commission. From there, the work has evolved into creating more and different types of toppers from the various trims, textiles and paper items I have collected over the years. Each topper is a completely unique creation based on the materials I have at hand, those I collect at the time of the project, the color palette specified and the various needs of my clientele. Many of the items on the toppers are antique or vintage materials. I use archival quality glues and paints whenever possible to insure the topper stays fresh and bright over time. Many of my clients display their toppers under a glass covering such as a bell jar. This helps to further preserve the toppers and showcases their craftsmanship and charm. Some of the toppers rest on decorated boxes suitable for storing small keepsakes from weddings and other life events. However, above all, the toppers are meant to be a creative reminder of special times that provides a spark of whimsy to those who own them!”

2730742298_02cd1929e7_b.jpg
2729891697_e921bd563e_b.jpg

How totally cute are these?! They almost seem a little bit Tim Burton-esque with their long, lanky bodies. Now we all know that the wedding industry is trendy and over the past 10 years or so I’ve seen a departure from cake toppers of old as wedding cakes themselves have become more decorative and elaborate. But I predict that the cake topper is coming back in a big way, but this time around couples have access to shops like this where they can have something really custom-made to suit their personality as a couple or perhaps to even use some personal elements in their cake topper which will be a keepsake…like your grandmother’s hanky or a swatch of mom’s wedding dress that was too outdated to actually wear?

Definitely go check out the shop and find out what Leslie can do for your wedding…

Since we’ve opted to have our wedding on a Sunday and considering that our venue is booked the day before, we have some time constraints in terms of when we are able to have our ceremony rehearsal since there is going to be another wedding going on in the afternoon. So, with a rehearsal time of about noon, it did not make any sense to have a traditional “rehearsal dinner” plus we’re not really going the traditional route with anything else so why start there?

Instead, we decided to go silly and fun with it and booked an upscale bowling alley called Lucky Strike for a rehearsal party instead. We’ll have a private room with 6 lanes, food & drink and a whole lot of bowling action for about 50 of our closest family and friends.

I actually attended an ISES event there about a year ago and somehow ended up in 2nd place for the highest bowling score of the evening, don’t even ask me how that happened, it was definitely a fluke. Here are a couple of pictures of the venue by Fotobriceno.

I just came across a post on DC Nearlyweds that made my heart skip a beat and then I got pretty disappointed to realize that Sports Car Rentals is in Charlottesville which is just a little bit too far away to be practical as an option for us. We already have a fabulous 1957 pink Cadillac lined up as our wedding day transportation but seeing as how I don’t have a car in DC anymore, we will need to rent something to get around. Now I for one would rather ride around in one of these babies than some standard rental car.

Any Elvis fans out there? Are any of your men Elvis fans? Mine is and how incredible would it be to be chauffeured around on your wedding day in this fabulous 1956 pink Cadillac? I’m lucky because it is owned by a friend of my mother’s so I will be riding around in this gorgeous car as if I was Priscilla herself…I’d rather pretend to be Priscilla than Elvis’ mom, you know. The good news is that if you’re getting married in the DC area, this car is now available to you too through Classy Classics.

Also available, this very cool white jaguar. Beautiful!

So obviously I’m not going to be shooting my own wedding…even though I think it would be really fun to shoot. :) But anyone who knows me, knows that I would be sad to not to at least have access to a camera at some point on my wedding day, so I’m thinking of picking up this little mini digital Leica. How adorable is this? And you could totally fit it in a little purse or a pocket (if you have one).

I first became aware of it through wedding photographer phenom, Jessica Claire and have decided that I too must have one. If you want one too, you can pick them up at Urban Outfitters.

booth-sample-3-tn.jpg
Not that this is anything new or revolutionary or even that unusual at weddings these days but surprisingly, I have never actually shot or attended a wedding with a rented photobooth. I have very fond memories of going in these things with my parents as a child and we definitely have some goofy strips of b&w pictures in our family photo albums. But more than anything else, the fact that I am a photographer myself, I feel a strong desire to have one of these things at my own wedding. I think it will provide some great entertainment for our guests as well as a fun, kooky page in our wedding album.

Anyway, I really prefer the old, vintage b&w variety as opposed to the new digital booths that are around these days. So, I am happy to report that yesterday I went online to Photobooth Scrapbooks and reserved one for our wedding. One more detail taken care of. Yay! Is anyone else out there planning to have one of these at your own wedding? If so, will you share with us where you found your booth?

slanket_logo.jpg
With Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching, I thought it might be a good time to make a suggestion for what might possibly be the best gift ever. This is what Gary bought me for Valentine’s Day last year (after I emailed him the website), it’s called the slanket and I really wish that I had invented it. I would be much smarter and richer if I had. :) Anyway, it’s basically just a big fleece blanket with sleeves. I wear mine all the time while I type on my laptop, watch tv (I can hold the remote), read, drink my coffee…anything at all. I have a grey one. Gary has hinted or actually come right out and told me that he would very much like to get his own slanket for V-Day this year.

Instead of a bunch of roses, cheap jewelry or a bear from the grocery store, wouldn’t you rather give and/ or receive something like this on a made-up holiday? Who else can totally see their man happy on the couch like this guy? :)

BTW, for those of you who missed it, leave a comment under the last post (Stop! don’t plan a wedding with out this book). One lucky reader will win a copy of the book courtesy of Laura Weatherly.

Most of you out there probably aren’t as obsessed with lighting as I am, but if you’re having an outdoor wedding, that big old sun in the sky is one of those things you’ll have to think about. That’s why I was so thrilled to stumble across this wedding sunset calculator on the blog of a very talented Socal wedding photographer (and a personal friend of mine) named Chelsea Elizabeth. Just go to weather.com and you can calculate exactly what time the sun will set on your wedding day. Here is mine.
picture-2.png

If your ceremony is to take place anytime near sunset, keep in mind which direction your guests will be facing. You don’t want them to be squinting directly into the blinding sun during your ceremony. I think it would be much kinder to have that gorgeous golden sunlight at their backs but illuminating you and your fiance instead. Personally I plan to have my ceremony about an hour and a half before the actual sunset to avoid this issue as much as possible. Believe me, if you give a little thought to this issue, your photographer will thank you. :)
