I have been meaning to mention the Bridal Bubbly Blog on here for a while now and I just couldn’t put it off any longer, so today you all get to meet my amazingly talented wedding planners and friends (Laura, Sara & Amy) over at Engaging Affairs.
ea.jpg
These are the ladies who helped me to pull together my own wedding and countless other DC weddings that I’ve had the pleasure to shoot. They are not only great at what they do but I feel very lucky to call them friends as well. Engaging Affairs has been named as THE top wedding planners in DC by Washingtonian Magazine for as many years as I can remember and whenever one of my brides has a question that I can’t answer (yeah like that ever happens ;) ), these are the ladies that I call on to help.

So please go visit the Bridal Bubbly blog which has really picked up momentum lately and leave them some love (comments) to welcome them to blog-land and enter this week’s giveaway for your very own copy of Laura’s book,
Better Off Wed.

Okay here it is…I’ve been waiting all week for this.  I had the pleasure of meeting Belinda a couple of months ago when she styled a shoot I did with Kirstin Fox of Castle Bride Couture. I had recently received my own wedding video and I decided to play it for everyone. Belinda loved it so much that she decided to hire our videographers, Monachetti and even ended up getting some inspiration from my flower girl outfits as well. She had already booked a photographer and although I was a little bummed at the time, now I know that she made the best possible choice in the very talented Duke Khodaverdian who captured the style of the event flawlessly. I’m so in love with these images and believe me, I’m tough to impress.
How fabulous is the pink veil by Kirstin Fox?

And Scott looks pretty dapper himself.

I asked Belinda a few questions about her gorgeous wedding…

Did you have a theme for your wedding? What was your color palette?

Hollywood Glam, Vintage 1930’s
Chocolate, Champagne, Blush Pink & Green

What words would you use to describe the style of your wedding?

Glamour, vintage, organic, fun, unique, simple yet elegant.

Where did you find inspiration for your detail elements?

I think Union Station itself was an inspiration. We both loved the architecture of the building and the fact that it was a place where soooo many people, from different walks of life came through on a daily basis really inspired us to have our reception there. This represented culture & diversity which we both love and celebrate in our lives. The Union Station, built in the 1930’s had so much charm and elegance to it. All we had to do was pull from what was already there and add some of our style to it. Our invitations looked like old train tickets. The chocolate and champagne colors came from the reception room itself. Blush pink was the color of my wedding dress. The green is for the organic, raw feel which we love and wanted present in our wedding to represent nature. Old black & white films, Marilyn Monroe, and bringing back a classy era with a twist of modernism & simplicity. Later it dawned on us…it’s a “Union Station”…

Check out the adorable flower girl outfits complete with pettiskirts.

Hello darlings, I’m baaack. We are still trying to get the new site programmed…it’s going slowly but it is coming. Anyway, today I am thrilled to announce that I have a gorgeous book from Colin Cowie to give away to one of our readers. But first here’s a little info about the book:

Lavishly photographed and beautifully arranged,
1,001 of Colin Cowie’s most spectacular ideas with gorgeous photographs to inspire every bride and groom

Colin Cowie Wedding Chic
1,001 Ideas for Every Moment of Your Celebration

When a bride imagines her wedding, she sees something very particular.

Her color scheme is bold and rich or soft and ethereal. She pictures nuptials taken in her mother’s garden or on an exotic beach with the ocean crashing in the background. She envisions an elegant sit-down dinner or a fabulous cocktail party with a great DJ who keeps the party going late into the night.

Regardless of personal taste, every bride can practically see herself at the altar, taste the cuisine, and feel the music playing when she enters the reception. But before the wedding comes together with all the romance and glamour, she needs to make decisions about the details.

With so many choices, it’s not hard to decide where to begin—you have the help of wedding designer extraordinaire, Colin Cowie. In COLIN COWIE WEDDING CHIC(Clarkson Potter; $40.00), he inspires and instructs the bride with thoughtful introductions followed by magnificent photographs. Colin’s practical advice also demonstrates how to weave a thread of style throughout the celebration.

Lavishly photographed, WEDDING CHIC showcases 1,001 of Colin’s most spectacular ideas in full vibrant color and presents a comprehensive resource for creating a wedding that is unparalleled, memorable, and–above all–personal. Organized by the individual components that require thought and design, chapters include:

· Bouquets and Other Ceremony Flowers: 38 photos of bouquet options just for the bride exploring a variety of colors and shapes; bouquet photos for the bridesmaid and mother of the bride; hair wreathes and baskets for the flower girl; ring boxes with flower accents; and boutonnières for the men.
· Ceremony Décor: Whether on a beach, in a garden, under a tent, or in a church, Colin’s ideas cover every ceremony detail including the arrangement of the chairs, personalizing the aisle, decorating the arbor and, incorporating the natural design of the location.
· Centerpieces: Bring a sense of drama to your evening with a gorgeous seasonal centerpiece—but don’t rely strictly on flowers. Colin will show you how to incorporate fruit, greens, and other non-floral elements.
· Cakes: An icon that should bring in the elements of the ceremony and reception, Colin will demonstrate how to design a cake that reflects your colors, style, flowers, and dress. He will also go step-by-step through the cake logistics of delivery, refrigeration, moving, tasting, serving, and storage for your first anniversary.
· Ritual and Ceremony: Learn how to visually incorporate your ethnicity and family traditions with rituals from your background.

Full of the sophistication and elegance that only Colin could have envisioned, WEDDING CHIC takes the bride step by step, through all of the sumptuous details, describing choices and how to work her personal vision, family traditions and story of courtship into one incredible event.

One of my long-time friends from the wedding biz back in DC is the fabulous Laura Weatherly who in addition to being a wedding planner is also a really amazing published author. A couple of weeks after the news of our engagement spread, I received a gift in the mail from Laura. It was my very own autographed copy of her book, Stop! Don’t Plan a Wedding Without This Book. At that point Gary and I weren’t even thinking about wedding planning, we were too busy being googley-eyed at each other and staring at my engagement ring to think of anything else. But now that the planning stage has commenced, I pulled the book off the shelf and boy is it full of fantastic info. Here’s one excerpt that I think will be helpful to many of you out there.

Wedding Reception or Meat Market?

Beware of the many insidious ways your guest list can grow beyond your wildest dreams, and establish rules early on. One of the biggest questions I get is regarding dates to weddings. I’m a believer that a wedding is a personal event where you should be surrounded by those people who are nearest and dearest to you, not by our cousin’s latest hook-up. There are exceptions to my “no date” stance, of course.

When to Invite Dates

- the couple is engaged (or married obviously)
- the couple is living together
- the couple has been exclusively dating for many months
- your maid of honor really wants to bring a date

It can be tough to draw the line, but if you don’t, you’ll find your wedding is full of people you’ve never met and will most likely never lay eyes on again. One additional exception to the rule extends to the wedding party. I have many brides who allow their bridesmaids and groomsmen to invite dates as a small reward for being forced into chartreuse satin and rented shoes. I think this is a fair allowance. Considering some of the bridesmaids’ dresses I’ve seen, they should be allowed to bring a dozen dates.”

Of course it’s up to each of you to make your own rules, that’s what being an Unbride is all about, right? I do think that it’s great advice though to stick to your guns as much as possible or you could end up with some hurt feelings. If you have the room and the budget to allow for dates though, then go for it. Most of my friends are already married or cohabitating so this may not be as much of an issue. If I could let everyone bring a date, I would.

One more thing, Laura is graciously giving me a copy of this book to give away to a blog reader. If you want it, leave a comment below and I’ll randomly choose a winner.

So I am lucky enough to be working with some really fabulous ladies at Engaging Affairs and they are helping me with all of the details of this wedding that I couldn’t possibly manage on my own.
picture-4.png
I can’t stress to you enough the importance of having some sort of wedding coordinator help you with your own wedding. If you can afford one, I highly recommend it, it is an investment in peace-of-mind.

They usually come in a few varieties:

The full weekend experience: this usually includes up to & including the entire wedding as well as the whole weekend (bridal luncheon, rehearsal dinner etc) of the wedding including overall design, vendor selection, contract negotiation & day-of execution.

Complete wedding planning
: general assistance with overall design, vendor selection, contract negotiation & day-of execution.

Day of Coordinator
: if you have done basically all of the leg-work yourself but you’d like to have someone at your event who is responsible for tying all of the details together & for taking all of the phone calls on the actual day of your wedding, this might be a great option for you. Just don’t expect them to do physical labor like setting tables or arrange decor, that is the job of your caterer or florist.

On-site contact
: This is something completely different from an actual wedding coordinator but might be provided to you courtesy of a church or reception site. Just be sure to know what they do or not do and what is the difference between an on-site coordinator and an actual wedding planner.
